Despite facing many challenges, African communities in the Sixth Region have also made significant contributions to art, music, literature, politics, and other fields, and have played important roles in social and political movements for equality and justice.
Shaka Jamal is empowering humanity through film, music and culture. He has lived and worked between his city Oakland and Johannesburg in South Africa for over two decades, always transferring knowledge and growing his appreciation of humanity.
His documentary film I Am Hope is an insightful documentary about a resilient community coming together to create the first yoga and mindfulness class in Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Middle Schools.
